The Desire to Improve The Platō Experience

Platō was never built to be another coffee brand.

“From day one, we set out to build something bigger, a brand that brings people together,” says co-founder and CEO, Stephan Bredell. “Coffee Sculpted, Community Included” isn’t just a slogan. It’s how we approach everything we do.”

Part of that ambition is looking for ways to innovate and engage their community with something different and elevated. So, rather than bolting on a generic points card, Platō wanted a rewards system that felt better, smarter, and more meaningful.

By mid-2025, Platō was already one of South Africa’s fastest-growing companies, with 98 stores open and a target of 150 by the end of the year. Scaling a loyalty programme to match Platō’s pace meant the technology had to remove friction for the customer and the barista, not add to it.

Building Loyalty into The Payment

The desire to innovate led Platō to partner with Yoyo and adopt a loyalty mechanic no one else was using: bank card-linked loyalty.

Since the 1st June 2025, every card tap at a Platō till has automatically earned 5% cashback. The reward reflects instantly in the Platō app, with no additional loyalty card, separate scan, or extra step at the counter.

Signing up for the loyalty programme only takes four steps:

Tap a bank card to pay at any Platō cafe

Register a mobile number on the card machine (a once-off step)

Download the Platō app

Earn cashback automatically on every card payment.

The mechanic is built around the idea that loyalty shouldn’t ask more of the customer than the coffee itself.

“We did not want to fix loyalty. We wanted to reinvent it,” says Bevan Ducasse, CEO of Yoyo. “So we built a system where the customer’s bank card becomes their loyalty card. No extra cards, no extra steps. Just frictionless loyalty.“

With nothing left to remember, the moment of delight arrives instantly, and the gap between the purchase and reward disappears.

How Removing Friction From Loyalty Grew Platō’s Business

A year of tap-and-go loyalty left a data trail. It tells a consistent story of fast adoption that kept climbing.

Fast Adoption and Sustained Loyalty

Within three weeks of launching, the Platō app accounted for over 30% of in-store transactions, more than double the industry standard for loyalty app adoption.

A year later, it’s still going strong. The share of checkout stands at 34.25%, with some stores exceeding 50%. Proof that the launch spike wasn’t a fad, but sustained, lasting consumer behaviour that’s still growing.

Growth With No Friction

Platō’s card-linked loyalty programme is now live in 132 stores nationwide with 150,000+ customers registered in under a year.

For a loyalty programme with no physical card, it’s a strong signal that the “tap first, register later” mechanic is working. It removes a barrier to entry, and the frictionless behaviour requires no extra steps from baristas, making the programme easy to scale and adopt with each new store opening.

Bigger Basket Sizes and Customer Engagement

One of the main reasons brands launch a loyalty programme is to grow customer spend. The card-linked loyalty mechanic has exceeded expectations, with an upsell rate of 124.58%, indicating that Platō loyalty members are spending more per basket than those without the programme.

Over the last year, Platō customers earned cashback on over 301,000 transactions and redeemed rewards more than 80,000 times. With a redemption rate of roughly 27%, loyalty members are using their rewards rather than letting them go unused in the app.

Diving further into Platō’s month-on-month data, repeat customers have consistently accounted for at least a fifth of all active users since the programme matured. The average loyalty member completes close to three transactions in a typical month, confirming that stopping for a coffee at Platō has become a habit rather than a once-off or occasional spend.

When asked if Bredell would recommend card-linked loyalty, he doesn’t hesitate: “Definitely worth it. It’s a seamless experience for the customer.”

The One Surprise Platō Didn’t Expect and What’s Next

What surprised Bredell wasn’t the incredible customer response, but the reaction from other businesses.

“The amount of like-minded brands and companies that have wanted to cross-collaborate via our and their apps,” he says. “It just shows the value that Platō’s community possesses and the type of value-adds we can offer.”

What does that mean for Platō’s loyalty programme going forward?

Bredell says the focus is on making the app more interactive. He hopes to bring in more partners to widen the rewards available to customers and to continue refining the experience.

What Platō’s Loyalty Success Means for South African Retailers

Card-linked loyalty removes two of the main reasons loyalty stalls: the friction of additional steps and the lag between a customer’s action and their reward.

By embedding the reward into the payment, participation doesn’t rely on a customer’s memory. Adoption becomes instant, just like the rewards.

For South African brands still relying on traditional loyalty methods, Platō’s first year is a testament to how quickly adoption, basket sizes, and engagement can grow when you build loyalty on top of an action a customer was already taking.

Driving more repeat customer revenue is easy.

It’s not about offering the biggest discount or the flashiest reward.

What gets consumers coming back every month, or multiple times a week, is your loyalty and rewards programme. When you remove as much friction as possible between shops and focus on small, repeatable rewards, you can encourage consumers to return often and spend a little more each time.

Here are four growth levers you can pull to impact purchase behaviour and turn a shop into a frequent habit.

1. Increase Purchase Frequency

To increase revenue from existing customers, you need to incentivise them to buy more often. Even if their spend remains R200 for each purchase, if that’s 4 visits in a month, you’ve already increased their customer lifetime value.

But to turn a shop into a habit, you need to remove as much friction as possible from the incentive.

A 15% off basket reward will do little to motivate shoppers to return if getting it requires too many steps, such as remembering an additional loyalty card.

When you make earning rewards as simple as tapping a credit or debit card, the action is already part of the purchase. The customer doesn’t have to do anything extra to gain a reward.

Instead, shoppers are instantly rewarded for spending at your store, reinforcing the behaviour and incentivising repeat visits.

Read More: When Small Business Loyalty Tools Stop Working for Growing Retail Brands

2. Use Small, Frequent Rewards to Grow Basket Size

Cross-selling, upselling, and spend-based incentives help increase basket size. However, you don’t need a large reward to convince shoppers to spend more.

A R20 voucher can lead to an additional spend of R140 because the reward triggers a visit and a full shop.

These smaller rewards do something a bigger reward can’t: build a habit. A R500 discount on a big-ticket item is a one-off event that the customer plans for and uses only once. Whereas a R50 pharmacy or R150 Pick n Pay voucher is small and frequent enough to become a routine, increasing average monthly spend and overall customer lifetime value.

Read More: How to Use Loyalty Rewards to Shape Customer Behaviour

3. Choose Instant, Cash-Like Rewards

You don’t need bigger or better rewards to drive repeat-customer revenue. Real cashback ranks as the most-wanted loyalty benefit for 45% of consumers, and 40% want instant rewards.

By designing your loyalty program around instant, cash-like and repeatable rewards, spending the voucher becomes part of a routine and a habit, rather than an afterthought.

With more South Africans turning to loyalty programmes as a survival mechanism amid rising living costs, offering rewards that function like cash is the best way to capture market share, increase sales, and become integrated into consumers’ daily lives.

4. Make WhatsApp Part of Your Rewards Programme

23 million people in South Africa use WhatsApp at least once per month, open the app an average of 28 times per day, and it boasts a 90% open rate.

Email, on the other hand? It’s a channel that is usually ignored, with promotional messages landing in the trash bin or flagged as spam, unopened.

By linking your rewards and promotional messages via WhatsApp and card-linked loyalty, you’re connecting with your customers directly on a platform people engage with consistently.

It helps you reactivate customers, boost repeat-customer revenue, and increase basket size without the hurdle of navigating spam filters or low email open rates.

Generating Repeat Customer Revenue

Increasing repeat-customer revenue is built on small, compounding strategies. The easier an incentive feels, and the more rewards feel like instant cash, the higher your chances of turning a once-off shopper into a habitual loyal customer.

Gamification is now a native part of Yoyo Rewards.

Yoyo is excited to announce a partnership with the branded engagement specialists, Hailr, bringing native gamification mechanics directly into Yoyo Rewards. After hundreds of campaigns run together, what used to be a bolt-on is now built in.

“We are really excited to be fully integrated with the Yoyo offering,” says Ynze de Jong, Hailr Co-Founder.

“Starting with our very first WiCode, we have always distributed these as a way for valuing the customer’s time and attention, making things fun and measuring incremental return on advertising and engagement spend.
For the clients we work with, this means marketing campaigns can now include games, surveys and instant rewards, all running natively on the platform that powers your rewards. It is gamification designed to do what loyalty should always do: surprise and delight your customers, deepen brand affinity, and grow spend.

“Our mission has always been to create delightful moments between brands and their customers, and gamification is a powerful way to do that,” says Bevan Ducasse, Yoyo CEO.

“Bringing Hailr natively into Yoyo Rewards means our clients can now launch engaging, rewarding campaigns as easily as they issue a voucher. It removes the friction and keeps the delight.

Sitting on cards, in apps, and in accounts, waiting to be spent.

Stored value is the mechanism underneath every rand of it: money paid for in advance and held against future use, whether that’s a gift card balance, a reloadable reward, or a prepaid account balance.

With the right gift card platform in place, stored value cards are issued and spent seamlessly. But if the infrastructure is not built for real-time balance across channels, it shows up as a support ticket or a dispute at the till.

Here’s what stored value is, how it works behind a modern gift card, and what infrastructure you need in place to run it effectively.

What is a Stored Value Gift Card?

A stored-value gift card is a prepaid card that holds a fixed amount of money. Unlike a debit or credit card, it’s not linked to a bank account and is accessible to whoever receives it.

There are physical and digital gift card options. The latter makes it easier to reward employees, partners, or customers at scale, no matter their location in South Africa.

Depending on the rewards network of the digital gift card supplier, receivers can use the card at multiple stores, a single retailer, or a small group of retailers.

Read More: What is a Digital Gift Card Platform? A Practical Guide for Enterprise Brands

How Stored Value Gift Cards Work

Unlike a debit or credit card, the balance isn’t held on the card. It lives in a central float, and deductions are made from it in real time.

Here’s how it works.

Loading funds: The issuer buys the gift card and selects the amount to load. The monetary value sits in an account (sometimes called a float) held by the platform or issuer.

Making a purchase: When the receiver redeems the gift card, the retailer’s POS sends a validation request. Then, the system checks the unique code, confirms the available balance, deducts the amount and marks it as fully redeemed or partially spent.

Authorisation: Closed-loop cards are authorised directly against the issuer’s system. Open-loop cards such as prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift cards need authorisation from the card network itself as they can be spent anywhere the network is accepted.

Checking the balance: The central float means the balance is available to check in-store, in an app, or via a channel like WhatsApp. It updates in real time and will always show the same figure, no matter the channel.

Lost or stolen stored value cards: It’s possible to deactivate lost or stolen cards. However, digital stored value cards mitigate this issue by being tied to a customer account or accessed via WhatsApp.

Reloading: Reloadable cards can be topped up online, at the point of sale, or through the issuing platform, with the new amount reflected in the ledger immediately.

What Brands Need to Run a Modern Gift Card Programme

A basic gift card tool isn’t enough to keep up with the modern consumer. Brands need a stored value system that’s flexible, scalable on demand, and fully integrates into your existing tech stack.

In practice, it looks like the ability to:

Create and manage multiple types of stored value products: Gift, promotional, reward, staff incentive, and loyalty without running each as a separate system.

Set and adjust rule-based parameters: Redemption, usage, expiry, and eligibility should have their own rules rather than applying one fixed set to every type.

Integrate across eCommerce, POS, CRM and mobile environments: A gift card balance should behave the same way no matter where the customer engages with it.

Real-time insights on redemption and customer behaviour: Manual reconciliation or data silos won’t have a clear view or complete customer profiles.

A Modern Gift Card is More Than a Gift

With digital payments the go-to method for the majority of consumers, a stored value card is beneficial for everyone.

It gives customers increased financial control and ease of use, and brands can streamline reward programmes and gain valuable consumer behaviour insights to improve marketing strategies and boost engagement.

The South African loyalty landscape is saturated. The average economically active consumer belongs to 10.4 loyalty programmes, and adoption has grown from 67% in 2016 to 85% in 2025.

Most small business loyalty programmes are built to win a share of that attention with a stamp card or a single QR-based app.

While there isn’t anything wrong with that approach, the tool that gets your business to its first 100+ regulars isn’t the one customers can easily lose or forget about.

Here’s how to fix disengagement and create loyalty infrastructure that can scale with your small business as it grows.

3 Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Small Business Loyalty Programme

Your basic loyalty tool might be the reason for disengagement. Here’s what you could be missing and how to fix it.

Earning Rewards Requires Extra Steps From Customers

Many basic loyalty tools rely on customers remembering to swipe a card, bring a stamp card, or scan a QR code.

The problem with those methods is that people are forgetful. You might have left your wallet at home, used a different bag, or simply forgotten about the loyalty programme altogether.

The way to get around that isn’t blasting out more emails, blowing up posters in store, and training your till staff to ask, “Do you have your loyalty card with you?”

The solution is removing the friction with card-linked loyalty. The reward is tied to the bank card the customer uses to make the purchase. Earning happens instantly, without needing to open an app, hand over a card, or scan a code.

There’s nothing for the till operator to remember, and you don’t need to invest marketing resources into building a new habit with consumers. The habit to tap or swipe is already there.

There’s No Unified View to Understand Your Customer Data

When your loyalty programme relies on stamps, or a system where the earning and redemption data isn’t collected in one place, it’s hard to know what’s driving individual purchasing behaviour.

You don’t have hard data on how many customers your last loyalty campaign activated, what products drive people to your store, and when customers re-shop for their favourites.

Without that visibility, you can’t build complete customer profiles, and your business is left making marketing decisions based on instinct rather than facts.

Loyalty infrastructure with a single-source reporting dashboard closes the gap by pulling transaction data on recency, frequency, spend, and product preference into one place.

With no more data silos, you can build campaigns for specific customers and see whether your reward drove spend.

Read More: How to Use Loyalty Rewards to Shape Customer Behaviour

Customers Aren’t Using Their Rewards

No one redeeming? The problem isn’t your reward, but the mechanic.

For nearly five years, Wimpy’s redemption rate for the On The Go campaign stagnated between 8-24%. In late 2023, the brand removed the manual coupon and replaced it with an auto-applied, card-linked mechanic, multiplying the redemption rate sevenfold.

Disengagement usually means customers are getting stuck at a friction point.

For small retail businesses, there are two ways you can fix this:

wiCode: It simplifies the redemption step into a single, straightforward code a customer can use at the till.

WhatsApp delivery: Instead of asking a customer to open an app or find an email, you can deliver rewards straight to WhatsApp.

wiCode allows you to send rewards instantly and set up trigger events like a new customer signing up or reaching a milestone. The reward is delivered via email, SMS or WhatsApp, and with the latter boasting a 90%+ open rate, you’re removing redemption friction and setting your loyalty programme up for success.

How to Fix Your Small Business Loyalty Programme

Trying to fix loyalty one piece at a time is usually how small businesses end up with a stack of systems that can’t scale or talk to each other.

To avoid outgrowing tools, you need to treat loyalty as something that’s built to grow with you.

Yoyo is the loyalty platform behind some of South Africa’s largest retail loyalty programmes, and it scales up or down without asking for a rebuild at every stage.

The physical loyalty card is dying.

It’s not because consumers don’t care about rewards. According to the South African Loyalty Landscape Whitepaper, 85% of economically active South Africans are participating in loyalty programmes.

The real reason is the point of friction the physical loyalty card creates.
Consumers need to remember to bring it to each shop, and with more people opting to pay with digital wallets, a physical one doesn’t always leave the house anymore.

As a consequence, leading South African brands are switching to card-linked loyalty. It helps shoppers earn rewards automatically whether they swipe with a physical card or tap with a digital one.

What is Card-Linked Loyalty?

Card-linked loyalty connects a customer’s debit or credit card to their loyalty account.

At the till, there is no need to remember a separate card or open an app. The customer pays, and the rewards are instant.

It removes an entire step of friction from a loyalty programme, and gives brands better data on shopper behaviour. If the customer always pays with the same card, you’ll have a complete view of purchase history showing frequently bought items, when re-shops happen, and how often someone visits your store.

Using all that complete customer profile, you have the data to build personalised campaigns based on individual purchasing habits.

Read More: What is Loyalty Infrastructure? And Why You Need It

Why It’s Popularity Growing in South Africa

For the majority of South African shoppers, contactless and tap-and-pay are becoming the default payment method.

With the popularity of digital wallets, it’s becoming increasingly normal to leave your house without a wallet and use your phone to pay for purchases throughout the day.

The shift in how consumers pay for goods creates a drop in engagement for traditional loyalty programmes built around a separate card or app. It’s a mechanic asking shoppers to take an extra step when payments have become more frictionless.

With the average economically active South African belonging to 10.4 loyalty programmes, card-linked loyalty gives brands the ability to win attention in a crowded space without demanding more effort from shoppers.

How It Works: Earning vs Redemption

Here’s how the mechanic works:

Earning: Shoppers earn points and rewards instantly through their linked bank card. Once a card is linked to a loyalty account, every qualified purchase earns points in the background, turning payment into the loyalty event.

Redemption: When customers want to redeem their rewards, it runs through a dedicated mechanism rather than the card payment. For example, customers can redeem their rewards via wiCode, a South African digital voucher and payment standard. It enables the real-time generation, distribution, and redemption of digital codes across a shared retail network.

Ideally, you want one loyalty platform capable of handling earning via card-linked loyalty and frictionless redemptions.

What Card-Linked Loyalty Solves for Businesses of Every Size

For a large retail group, the value of card-linked loyalty is consistency and complete customer profile data. For a small business, it’s a frictionless loyalty programme without the usual complexity.

Here’s how it can improve loyalty for your business:

Removes friction at checkout: No app, barcode or second card means faster transactions and a better customer experience.

Widens participation: Loyalty programmes that work passively and build off an existing habit have higher engagement rates and repeat customers.

Improves data quality: Each purchase made with a linked card gives a more holistic view of purchasing habits. With more data points, you can better understand which campaigns drive spend and why.

Scales without new hardware: Card-linked loyalty doesn’t need new till hardware or another app. It rides off existing card rails, making it easy to roll out no matter the business size.

What to Look for in a Card-Linked Loyalty Partner

Before committing to a loyalty partner, you’ll want to check the following:

Integration depth: Does linking happen at the payment network level, or does it rely on a workaround that only works with select banks or card types?

Redemption flexibility: Can customers redeem across multiple brands and formats, or only within one narrow ecosystem?

Reliability at transaction volume: How much volume can the platform handle, and what is its uptime?

Reporting: Can the business see earn and redemption data separately, to understand what’s actually driving repeat behaviour?

Does your loyalty programme build a purchasing habit or only record a behaviour?

If it’s the latter, you’re probably focusing on when a purchase happens and not why. The best programmes with high redemption rates and repeat users aren’t the ones giving away the most value. It’s the brands rewarding behaviours that turn casual shoppers into consistent, frequent buyers.

Here’s how to set up or audit your rewards programme to ensure you’re reinforcing long-term loyalty.

1. Identify The Specific Behaviour You Want to Reinforce

Before choosing a reward mechanic, it’s important to understand the behaviour you want to change.

“Increasing loyalty” is a KPI outcome. A “behaviour” is something the customer does, like making a second purchase within 30 days or increasing basket size.

Once you know the target action, you can map out your rewards programme to reinforce it. Reward the wrong action, or reward it inconsistently, and you’ll struggle to get the results you want.

To strengthen the response to your reward mechanic, you’ll also need to apply basic psychology principles to understand the “why” behind the behaviour:

Endowed Progress: A welcome bonus or a small boost on a rewards tier increases early engagement. Customers feel motivated to work towards the reward because progress is already underway.

Goal-Gradient: Reminding customers “you’re two purchases away from your next reward” speeds up behaviour due to feelings of anticipation and satisfaction.

Surprise and Delight: Unexpected rewards create a strong emotional response and strengthen your relationship with the customer.

Reciprocity: Customers who receive an unprompted benefit will have a pull to reciprocate, usually with continued spend and not only gratitude.

With a clear target behaviour and an understanding of what’s motivating it, the next step is to match your loyalty rewards to where the customer is in their relationship with your brand.

2. Match The Reward to The Customer’s Stage in The Journey

“Spend money” isn’t the only behaviour you want to reward.

A new customer vs a five-year regular has different motivations and expectations of your brand. Treating every customer the same creates a mismatch and prevents you from developing deeper brand affinity.

To prevent designing loyalty rewards that lack specificity, focus on the action you want the customer to do next.

<table style="border: none; Deliver The Reward at The Moment of Action

Timing of a reward does the heavy lifting in any successful loyalty programme. When it’s sent at the right moment, it instantly reinforces the connection between the action, the brand, and the reward.

If you wait a week later to send a 10% off voucher to encourage a first-time customer to come back, you’ve already lost valuable momentum.

With timeliness such an important factor, the mechanics behind how a reward is delivered could be argued to matter more than the reward itself.

An example is Wimpy’s On The Go loyalty campaign powered by Yoyo. When the brand moved over from a manual coupon to an auto-applied, card-linked mechanic, it removed an entire layer of friction and led to a 7x uplift in redemptions.

Since making the change, redemptions have held steady, demonstrating how important immediacy is in shaping behaviour and how it’s the mechanic, not the reward

Read More: WhatsApp Loyalty: How South African Retailers Can Deliver Instant Rewards

4. Remove Friction From Earning and Spending Rewards

Removing friction from loyalty doesn’t only affect the timeliness of a reward. It involves the entire process from enrolment to continued engagement.

The harder it is for someone to earn and spend rewards, the less embedded it is in existing spending behaviours and the more difficult it’s going to be to shape behaviour and develop a long-lasting habit.

When designing or auditing your loyalty programme, you’ll want to remove the following points of friction:

Multi-step onboarding, earning and redemption: Each step is an exit point for a customer to lose interest and disengage.

Fragmented systems: If your loyalty, gift cards and rewards live on separate platforms and don’t share data, the customer experience is not smooth and can lead to frustration.

Rewards expiry: Rewards with tight or unclear expiry windows can make participating feel not worth the effort.

One-off rewards: To form a habit, it needs to be repeatable. Having a reward that’s available multiple times throughout the month embeds your loyalty programme into someone’s daily life.

Read More: The Hidden Cost of Fragmented Gift Card and Rewards Systems

5. Measure Whether Customer Behaviour Has Changed

When you break it down, a loyalty programme is a feedback loop. There’s an action, and a reward operating on repeat. What you need to measure is whether the loop is giving you the desirable results.

Here’s what you need to track:

Redemption rate: Are customers claiming their rewards?

Repeat purchase frequency: Is the target behaviour increasing?

Time between reward and next action: Did the reward trigger a visit?

Behaviour at tier thresholds: Do customers become more or less engaged when approaching the next reward or tier?

If you’re not seeing results, it’s rarely because the reward is too small. The culprit is usually friction or timing preventing the action from becoming a habit.

Read More: Why Legacy Loyalty Platforms Can’t Keep Up with Modern Retail

Improve Your Customer Retention

Loyalty works when each step holds together: the right action, matched to the right stage, delivered at the right moment, with zero friction.

For that to happen consistently, your loyalty infrastructure needs to support every phase of the journey and scale as your programme grows.

To learn more about how Yoyo’s card-linked loyalty can streamline your reward mechanics, explore our loyalty and voucher solutions.

A gift card programme working flawlessly in one store, on one POS setup isn’t hard to build.

The challenge lies in keeping everything feeling the same once your business starts to scale. While the obvious solution might be to “build another API connection” for the new retailer or POS system, it’s a band-aid fix.

Eventually, it’s going to cost more to build and maintain each connection, and with no single source of truth, reconciliation becomes a nightmare, and there’s a massive risk of human error.

Leading brands scale gift card programmes by choosing infrastructure that removes complexity, reduces costs, and keeps the customer experience identical.

One System, Consistent Redemption Everywhere

Scaling a gift card programme starts and ends at the issuance and redemption. The experience needs to be the same no matter the volume or the location of the transaction, and the only way to achieve synchronicity is running everything through one system.

When there’s a single source of truth, and only one integration to manage, it solves the problem of outgrowing technology or reward partners using different POS systems.

Your reconciliation records will always match, and most importantly, the customer at the till won’t notice a difference between online, in-store or balance discrepancies.

Access to a Large Redemption Network

A problem with a generic gift card offering is redemption limitations. If a customer can only use it at one retailer, it alienates recipients who don’t shop there.

Instead of feeling rewarded, cardholders are left with meaningless value they can’t use.

To avoid sitting with unredeemed value, leading brands are moving towards issuing gift cards across a network of retail partners. It removes the guesswork of picking the “right” brand and gives recipients the freedom to choose a meaningful reward.

Issue Gift Cards Across Channels

The modern consumer expects flexibility from brands. Some prefer accessing rewards via WhatsApp, others via an app or Google Wallet.

Choosing a gift card platform with issuance flexibility saves resources in the long run.

Being able to adapt where you send your rewards means you can always meet your customer in the right channel as you scale without needing to build additional infrastructure.

Finance Needs One Number Across Every Region

Once a digital gift card programme expands to more than one vendor or an enterprise volume, finance teams start to feel the strain.

Manually reconciling redemption data, keeping track of outstanding liability, and trying to produce a single group-level breakage figure when systems don’t speak to each other becomes an administrative time sink and audit nightmare.

To resolve the issue, leading brands looking to scale gift card programmes migrate to a single system. When there’s only one API connecting different touchpoints and feeding into one dashboard, the data from different sources comes together in a single source of truth.

Redemption, liability, and breakage data becomes visible in real time, across every region and system connected to the programme.

For finance teams, it means reconciliation and audits are simple, efficient tasks, instead of time-intensive projects with room for human error.

Scale Gift Card Programmes with the Right Platform

No matter the size of your business, infrastructure should always enable you to scale gift card programmes with ease.

Choosing something simple and having to migrate a year or two later, or investing resources into building and maintaining API connections from scratch, isn’t efficient and is always more expensive.

What you should look for is:

One API layer: Avoids initiating a new integration project every time you want to add a region, brand or POS.

Modular scaling: Growth should mean switching on capacity rather than renegotiating architecture.

One reconciliation dashboard: Finance should always have a consistent, real-time view.

Whatever regions or systems sit behind the gift card platform, none of it should be visible to the person redeeming the card or to the finance team trying to reconcile it.

Plan an enterprise loyalty programme rollout that goes live without disrupting the till, store teams or customer experience.

Rolling out a loyalty programme at an enterprise level is scary.

With so many moving parts from infrastructure to employee training to onboarding new rewards partners, there are many, many opportunities for something to go wrong. If that happens, it has an immediate impact on the customer experience and profit margins.

It’s the fear of “what ifs” that stalls most loyalty projects. Even if the budget is in place and the business case is signed off, if the risk of taking systems offline, experiencing technical failures, and retraining staff is too high, the launch won’t happen.

Unless you plan for the potential problems.

By building the “what ifs” into your strategy, you can avoid the hiccups and launch a loyalty programme with minimal disruptions. It comes down to three things: the correct sequencing, technical decisions, and guardrails.

Why Enterprise Loyalty Programme Roll Outs Break

In a matter of seconds, your loyalty programme needs to:

Receive a transaction

Identify the customer

Apply the redemption or earning rule

Send it back to your POS system

Update the customer’s profile once the transaction is complete

At the enterprise level, these steps are happening thousands of times each day, across multiple POS versions, reward partners and legacy systems.

The disruption rarely comes from the loyalty logic itself, but rather from how loyalty connects to your existing systems.

The risk sits in three places:

The point of sale: Whether it’s your own till or a partner’s checkout, anything that changes the payment or redemption flow turns every location into a deployment risk.

Operations and staff: New steps at the counter slow down service and multiply training costs across your headcount or your retail partners.

Existing systems: Loyalty needs to move data between your platform, your partners and the redemption network. Forcing fragmented systems is what makes disruptions unavoidable.

Read More: The Hidden Cost of Fragmented Gift Card and Rewards Systems

How to Roll Out an Enterprise Loyalty Programme

A non-disruptive enterprise loyalty rollout comes down to how you integrate and how little you change at the point of transaction.

Use API-First Loyalty Infrastructure

The leading cause of loyalty disruptions? Too many cooks in the kitchen.

When you have to manage multiple connections from different software providers to connect to your existing system, you’re setting yourself up for siloed data and disruption risk.

It’s even worse if the loyalty platform demands a rebuild of your legacy infrastructure to work.

The solution? A single API-first approach.

You integrate once rather than building and maintaining a separate connection for every retail partner and channel. It takes the pressure off your internal engineering team, reduces set-up time and complexity and prevents downtime risk.

Automate Rewards at the Point of Sale

For every extra action you ask of a cashier or at a partner’s checkout, you expose yourself to training costs and to slowing down customer service.

The goal of a loyalty platform is to keep new behaviour at the point of sale as close to zero as possible.

How do you do that?

Issuing, validating and delivering rewards and vouchers automatically with bank card-linked loyalty and channels your customer already uses, like an app, WhatsApp, or a Wallet Pass.

Your customer never misses out on earning rewards, and your staff don’t need to learn another process. The loyalty platform handles everything in the background with zero human error in redemption and issuance.

What does that look like in practice?

A real-time API voucher like wiCode reaches 27,000 retail locations through a single integration point. When redemption happens, it’s validated and processed through the API connection. When it’s time for reconciliation, there’s only one settlement process that covers the entire network and provides full audit trails.

The less a rollout depends on flawless execution by thousands of people across thousands of shifts, the less it can disrupt.

Build in Fraud Prevention and Audit Trails

A security gap is a disruption in waiting, and it loves to show up at the worst possible moment.

Vouchers are duplicated or redeemed twice

An outage takes the programme down at peak trade

Finance can’t produce an audit trail for compliance or retail partners

The way to keep security from becoming a disruption is to choose a loyalty partner that has built-in enterprise-level security.

Each voucher needs to be unique, encrypted and traceable.

Real-time fraud detection and secure validation

A full audit trail of issuance and redemption

Underneath all the security features, the rollout needs high-availability infrastructure. Choose a partner with 99.999% uptime that has a proven track record of handling enterprise transaction volumes.

Loyalty That Fits into Your Business

When you approach your loyalty programme as infrastructure that fits into your existing systems rather than something you need to bend around, rolling it out becomes a seamless process.

No matter how many stores you have or the size of your retail network, as long as your loyalty platform is adaptable, single-point, and secure, you can avoid disruptions that’ll bring your business to a halt.

Your loyalty programme isn’t underperforming because you’re offering the wrong rewards. It’s underperforming because the platform running it was built for a version of retail that no longer exists.

Relying on another generic points scheme to win attention isn’t going to cut it. South African shoppers want instant value, utility-based rewards, and a frictionless experience.

That type of flexibility and speed is not something legacy loyalty platforms can offer. Instead, the grinding away for points, inconsistencies across channels, and having to remember a loyalty card feel more like a chore than a mutually beneficial relationship.

Let’s take a look at the critical loyalty technology mistakes undermining your programme’s effectiveness and how you can address each one to drive results and increase customer lifetime value.

The Limitations of Legacy Loyalty Platforms

Delayed Rewards Feel Transactional, Not Valuable

In South Africa, the appeal of aspirational rewards and point-based programmes has worn thin. With rising living costs, consumers want utility-based rewards and no longer want to grind for points to get them.

It’s led to shoppers disengaging from loyalty programmes that don’t provide instant, real-world value and use complicated earning and redemption logic.

When the customer has to:

Spend R1000 to earn a R50 reward

Manage expiration dates for accumulated points

Wait for point balances to update overnight

Then the effort outweighs the reward. Delaying gratification means a shopper can’t get immediate satisfaction. By the time the points or reward lands, it’s forgotten, and the window to turn a one-time purchase into a repeat one closes.

Fragmented Loyalty Channels

The modern shopper rarely relies on one channel to interact with a brand. The buying journey could start with browsing on mobile or via an app, leading to an online or in-store purchase.

Yet most legacy loyalty programmes lack the infrastructure to accommodate natural shopping behaviour. Instead, it creates a disjointed experience that frustrates the customer and those working behind the tills.

It starts with inconsistent rewards across web, app and store:

Point values change depending on the channel

Redemption works online but not in-store

Points earned in-store aren’t reflecting online

And the problem intensifies with no unified customer profile.

When there are separate data systems and no single source of truth, it’s nearly impossible to recognise the same customer across different touchpoints.

With no unified view, you’re unable to:

Track points across channels

Offer instant rewards

Update points and balances in real-time

Maintain consistent purchase histories

Deliver personalised rewards and incentives

Read More: The Hidden Cost of Fragmented Gift Card and Rewards Systems

Lack of Deep Personalisation

One of the biggest problems with legacy loyalty programmes is painting every customer with the same brush.

Running on fixed “if this, then that” logic, there’s no room to segment a user base and deliver timely, personal rewards.

Instead, a first-time buyer and a ten-year customer get the same generic 10% discount, and there’s no mechanism to notice that a customer’s buying pattern is different or that an offer is no longer relevant.

With consumers facing upwards of 10,000 brand messages per day, generic communications are ignored and forgotten. That’s a massive problem for South African retailers, where the average consumer uses 10 or more loyalty programmes.

If your offers don’t spark immediate action or give customers a good enough reason to come back, you’re not going to struggle to gain market share or see high repeat purchases from loyalty campaigns.

Legacy Loyalty Technology is a Competitive Disadvantage

When your data lives in silos and your channels can’t communicate in real time, your loyalty platform and team can’t operate with speed and flexibility.

For example, using legacy loyalty infrastructure usually means:

Creating a promotional campaign requires an IT ticket, delaying responses to competitive threats and timely promotions.

An inability to quickly test and iterate new programme features.

Relying on manual batch jobs for data synchronisation.

Increasing developer costs as the loyalty program expands.

Requiring a cost-intensive implementation for every new retail rewards partner.

The result is an expensive loyalty programme that can’t keep up with competitors, consumer demand, or market changes.

Read More: What is Loyalty Infrastructure? And Why You Need It

No Clear ROI or Business Impact

Obsessing over points issued, redemption rates and sign-ups only tells you how busy your program is, not if it’s working.

A loyalty programme could have 100,000 registrations and issue millions of points, but still not contribute to customer value or business growth.

What your loyalty platform should help you track is customer lifetime value (CLV), but you can’t do that if your channels and data are fragmented.

When everything lives in a connected ecosystem, you can drive customer behaviour with data-driven segmentation and answer questions like:

What is the average lifetime spend of customers who redeem points vs non-members?

Do members who redeem personalised offers spend more?

How much do members who redeem partner offers spend?

Tracking metrics like these can help you determine whether your loyalty investments and campaigns are driving growth and retention.

Read More: Why Enterprise Loyalty Programmes Fail

Modern Loyalty Platforms Solve Legacy Limitations

Every limitation of legacy platforms has a fix: migrating to a modern platform that can keep up with consumer expectations and easily scale with your business.

When you make the switch, you gain the ability to use:

Real-time recognition: Instead of making shoppers wait for points, rewards are instant and available via WhatsApp within seconds of the transaction being complete.

One customer profile: Built around a single source of truth, earning and redemption work the same way regardless of channel, and customer profiles are complete.

Advanced loyalty rules: Whether it’s a birthday, a surprise reward, milestones, or tiered rewards, you have the flexibility to reward customer behaviours that drive your business goals.

Time to market: No-code tools enable marketing to launch campaigns quickly, reduce reliance on IT resources, and test new offers without any delays.

Connected technology: Using a single API connection reduces integration strain, streamlines onboarding for new retail partners, integrates with existing POS infrastructure, and lets you take advantage of bank card-linked loyalty to remove even more friction for customers.

Why The Switch is Worth Making

The old guard of customer loyalty programmes is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Too many generic point-based systems create loyalty fatigue that another 10% discount can’t fix.

Fundamental changes are needed if you want to attract loyal South African shoppers and hold their attention. Businesses that modernise their approach and adopt real-time personalisation, omnichannel integration and behaviour-based rewards will see it in retention and in lifetime value.
